A edição deste ano dos prémios Grammy consagrou uma jovem de 18 anos como a artista do ano. Billie Eilish ganhou cinco das seis categorias para as quais estava nomeada, tornando-se assim a primeira mulher a receber numa mesma edição os prémios de Álbum do Ano, Artista Revelação, Canção do Ano e Gravação do Ano. Eilish ainda ganhou o prémio de Melhor Álbum Vocal Pop a Solo.
Ainda nas mulheres vencedoras, Lizzo – a artista com mais nomeações nesta edição – recebeu três dos onze troféus, nomeadamente o Melhor Performance de Pop a Solo, Melhor Performance de R&B Tradicional e Melhor Álbum de Música Urbana Contemporânea. Entre outros vencedores noutras categorias estiveram Gary Clark Jr., que garantiu o prémio de Melhor Música de Rock, Melhor Perfomance de Rock e Melhor Álbum de Blues Contemporêneo, e Lil Nas X, que das seis nomeações recebeu dois Grammys nas categorias de Melhor Videoclip Musical e Melhor Performance de Pop em Grupo ou Duo, ambos pela música Old Town Road, em parceria com Billy Ray Cyrus.
Alicia Keys – a primeira mulher em 14 anos a apresentar os Grammy – fez no seu discurso de abertura da cerimónia uma homenagem ao ex-atleta da NBA Kobe Bryant, que faleceu num trágico acidente de helicóptero pouco antes, e também o rapper Nipsey Hussle, que foi assassinado em março do ano passado, e recebeu o prémio póstumo de Melhor Performance de Rap Cantado, por Higher, e Melhor Performance de Rap por Racks in The Middle, recebidos por John Legend e DJ Khaled.
Entre as várias atuações, a cantora Demi Lovato surpreendeu o público na sua primeira apresentação após sofrer uma overdose em 2018. Cantou Anyone, composta quatro dias antes de sua internação – e lançada minutos antes dela subir ao palco –, sendo ovacionada pela plateia presente no Staples Center, em Los Angeles, Califórnia.
